"do you want to paint the world red?"

one. he lies against cold, hard floors of a too cramped apartment at the only time inspiration comes ever flowing. a pencil rests loosely between thin, thin fingers and papers are strewn haphazardly as if to purposely depict the dramatic, silent turmoils of a struggling artist.

witching hour.

the dead of the night seeps into his bones as he reminisces about a home that feels too far away. jinju is his pride, the countryside sheathed so deep into his veins that his copper skin will always serve as a reminder that he ain't like these city folk. still, he's too selfish with his dreams to accept that jinju's the only place in the world that would allow him to prosper.

he's born right by the sea, with the taste of salt on his tongue and red paint in his veins. his parents are fishing folk, humble people residing in a small town where everyone knows his name. they raise him to see the world in black and white - this or that and never anything in between. work hard to live, live to work hard was the jang philosophy and while he goes along with it the first few years of his life - he eventually grows tired of believing there's nothing else out there for him.

two. his pencil remembers the way he rebelled against parents. black lines that don't connect begin to fill the spaces of white pages, finding their way down their own paths to eventually touch. all that's heard in the echoes against these walls are the sounds of his pencil running along hardwood floors and the annoying buzzing of his kitchen overhead light that threatens to blow a fuse.

he stays out way past curfew, coming home on most occasions drunk out of his soul and throwing up in plants that don't belong to him. his mother is heartbroken and his father is enraged by his behavior, and when all else fails - they take drastic measures of kicking him out of their home.

his aunt takes him in, 3 hours away in seoul where city lights and crowded streets are unwelcoming to a small town boy. he hates it here. there's nothing as real as the sea, nothing as loving as his mother's embrace.

he regrets rebelling and losing his parents' path

three. colors are being added within the lines now, light splashes of black and grays to shade in appropriate figures to make them more prominent. they're important to every story, every depiction of an illustration and while the colors of reds and yellows and blues and greens capture your attention first; that's never the whole picture the artist intends.

he's sixteen when he first visits hongdae. feet shuffling against littered sidewalks as he finds a place -- any place -- to lose himself for just a few hours. the graffiti adorned concrete catches his attention and he sees shades of passionate red for the first time.

he falls in love. in love with the art, in love with what they capture. he falls in love with the way they seem to be unapologetic, and how their details are thought out so well it is hard to see the same thing twice.

he goes home that night earlier than usual, sober and obedient. he tells his aunt that he wants to do art, and she agrees because if there's anything that will keep his head straight and on his shoulders -- it might as well be this.

she pays for all his art classes. she drives him to all the exhibitions he wishes to see, accompanies him in thought and in presence. she shows up to his smaller art shows at school, then his bigger ones, then his big reveal of his ocean mural located right in the center of their neighborhood. it's signed sinnerman, in honor of the song by nina simone. his aunt helps him stay on track and celebrates his wins with more chalk, more paint, more brushes, and more faith.

she's a big figure to him.

four. the end result takes him 3 hours to complete and the sun is ready to come up, but it all comes together the way he wants it to. golds shimmer along the corners of his masterpiece to represent wisdom and compassion, the butterflies fly in twos to show life and hope; his parents. but the main ticket item is lady justice (his aunt) who sits in her throne passing judgement to the boy on his knees (himself). he hopes this is something she'll come to like, she hopes this is something she takes to heart.

he barely makes it into university with strenuous effort his last two years of high school. contrary to popular belief, he's actually pretty intelligent when he applies himself, excelling at subjects such as mathematics and history. he gets into his first choice school with high marks on his exams and one hell of an admissions essay. korea university provides solace to the raging artist inside of him, their fine arts department boasting to be one of the best in the country. he thinks it's hard to believe that he managed to land himself where he is currently, but he thinks - like lines on paper - everything meets and ends where they need to.

his aunt and mother are proud of him and his father, well, his father eventually comes around. they continue to work hard at building a broken relationship and he thinks gaining his father's trust again is coming along nicely. his parents provide him an allowance for his off-campus housing, his aunt helps him with his tuition, and he provides the rest himself through freelance art jobs, part-time work, and then some. even along the way, he finds likeminded friends in the form of a fraternity. to say that he thought he’d never join one would be an understatement, but hey – take things as they come. that’s his philosophy.

when he graduates, he hopes to find work at the bigger illustration companies in seoul, so he can pay his aunt back and help his parents live comfortably. until then, sinnerman art will continue to bless the blank walls of seoul, hoping to one day inspire a kid just like him to follow down the same rainbow he managed to capture.
